The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) stretches from northeast Arkansas through southeast Missouri, western Tennessee, and into northeast Mississippi. The 1811–1812 earthquakes (M7.5–8.0) remain the largest historical events east of the Rockies. USGS estimates a 25–40% chance of an M6.0+ event within the next 50 years.
