The Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone (ETSZ) is the second-most-active seismic zone east of the Rocky Mountains, running roughly 200 miles from northeast Alabama through eastern Tennessee into southwest Virginia. It extends into western North Carolina and north Georgia mountain counties. The 2018 magnitude 4.4 Decatur, TN earthquake and the 2020 magnitude 5.1 Sparta, NC earthquake are recent notable events.
